Should I Get Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain Veneers Grand Rapids Cosmetic Dentists

Do you have front teeth with small chips, cracks, or stains? Are your front teeth slightly misshapen or gapped? If so, you may be a candidate for porcelain veneers.

A veneer is a wafer-thin slice of porcelain that we bond to the front of the tooth. As a cosmetic procedure, it’s designed to improve the appearance of your smile.

Here are some of the main benefits of porcelain veneers.

Fix Small Cosmetic Issues

Dental veneers are able to fix small cosmetic issues that are visible when you smile or talk.

During your consultation, we’ll determine if you’re a candidate for veneers. For example, we may recommend veneers to close slight gaps between front teeth.

If the tooth is fragile, your dentist may instead recommend a crown to strengthen it. Either way, your dentist will be able to find the right solution for your smile.

Preserve as Much Enamel as Possible

Once you remove enamel, it’s gone for good. The good news is that we only need to remove a small amount of enamel from the fronts of your teeth to make room for the veneers.

The veneers procedure is minimally invasive. As such, you may not even need a local anesthetic while we file down the fronts of your teeth.

Porcelain veneers are only bonded to the fronts of your teeth. But dental crowns have to fit over the entire tooth. This means that your dentist would have to remove more enamel for a crown than for a veneer.

Smile with Confidence

The veneers procedure takes two trips to our office.

During your first visit, we’ll file down a thin layer of enamel from the fronts of your teeth. That way, there’s space for us to bond the veneers to your teeth.

Next, we’ll take impressions of your teeth to send to the lab. To protect your teeth in the meantime, one of our dentists will bond temporary veneers.

When you return to our office, your permanent veneers will be ready. We’ll ensure that the tooth restoration matches the color of your natural enamel. That way, you can smile with confidence after leaving our office.

The result is veneers that look and feel natural.

Prevent Tooth Discoloration

The best way to avoid tooth discoloration is to practice good oral hygiene. You should also avoid staining foods. For example, dental veneers can chip if you bite down on ice and stain if you drink too much coffee.

If you take good care of your veneer teeth, you can expect them to last about 10 years.

Enjoy Simple Maintenance

Since dental veneers are non-porous, they may resist stains better than natural enamel. But you’ll still need to brush your teeth twice a day and floss once daily to maintain good oral health.

Also, make sure you schedule regular dental checkups with your dentist.

This simple maintenance will help you keep veneers pearly white for years to come.
