A filling restores your tooth’s strength and appearance after we remove a small cavity. But it’s important that you call our office at the first twinge of dental pain. The sooner we’re able to detect tooth decay, the more likely we’ll be able to repair your tooth with a simple filling.
If left untreated, a cavity will reach the inner chamber of your tooth (pulp) that’s made of live tissue. Once this happens, the pulp and tooth roots can get infected. In this situation, you would either need an emergency root canal or dental extraction.
A simple filling is much less invasive than either of these alternatives.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
We’ll numb your tooth with a local anesthetic before your procedure so you won’t feel any pain or discomfort. You may also request laughing gas if you have dental anxiety.
Next, the dentist will use a dental drill to carefully remove the decayed tooth matter. Once the cavity is gone, they’ll fill the hole with composite resin to restore the tooth. Composite resin also matches the color of your natural tooth enamel so you can smile with confidence.
What Causes Cavities
Cavities are caused by a sticky film of bacteria called dental plaque that lives inside your mouth. As you eat sugary and/or starchy foods, these bacteria consume the particles left behind to produce an acid that erodes tooth enamel and attacks your gums.
You may have a higher teeth cleanings, oral examinations, X-rays, and oral hygiene counseling.
if you neglect your oral hygiene or don’t see a dentist at least every 6 months for preventive care. includesRequest an Appointment With Advance Dental
